New Book Review: Mosaics by Nathaniel Harris

Looking for new ideas for learning about art? Or just in need of something new to do this summer? Our New books shelf has a great new Non-Fiction find for you. Mosaics by Nathaniel Harris provides readers with some great easy to understand art history and terrific craft ideas.

This books starts with answering questions 'What are mosaics?" and "How are mosaics made?" then proceeds to analyze 6 famous mosaics from around the world and throughout time, from Pompeii’s “Alexander Mosaic” to the London Tube's "North by Northwest" (that's right, based on the Hitchcock film). For each work, there's also a great "Story behind the art" feature that tells us what we are looking at and how the characters got to the scene we're viewing, from Greek mythology to Churchill in WWII, so we are learning about all sorts of history as well as art at the same time. There's also a handy little "eye spy" portion that pulls out specific parts of the mosaic that we might not notice, or that deserve a little extra attention.
Craft ideas include a mosaic pen holder (with macaroni), a patterned place made, photo frame, and wall boarder. What a great way to use small pieces of material, or parts you’re going to throw out the possibilities are endless! If you’re looking for a way to keep the kids busy, and learning something at the same time, check out Mosaics.

Check our catalog for this item!

We also have a large number of craft and drawing books found in the J 745.5 of the non-fiction section. Check them out and find neat things to do.
